Supplementary Health Care Plan costs to increase

After several years of holding the line on the cost of the Supplementary Health Care Plan coverage, pensioners who subscribe to the plan will face an increase as of January 1, 2025.

The plan provides coverage for pensioners and family members for such things as prescription drugs, paramedical services, medical services and supplies, hospitalization, and other services and supplies.

Unlike employees, pensioners pay healthcare premiums in their entirety. The amount varies by province, and it depends on the financial performance of the plan. In past years, surpluses have either reduced costs or prevented increases.

In the past year, costs have increased by more than 12 percent; however, pensioners will not assume the full amount. Surpluses from previous years are helping to limit next year’s premium increase to 4.9 percent.

The goal of the PNA is to ensure the plan meets pensioners’ needs and costs are affordable. We review the plan annually in October.
